Bonsucro is a global initiative dedicated to raising the sustainability of the sugar-energy industry, through the certification of agricultural and industrial activities to ensure compliance with the more relevant environmental, social and economical criteria for the production of sugarcane and its derivatives while recognizing the need for economic feasibility.

Based on the Bonsucro certification, Raízen confirms the sustainability of processes in the production chain of sugarcane based on the parameters of the European Union, considering the economic, environmental and social dimensions. We were the first company to certify a production unit with Bonsucro.

In 2016, we achieved certification in the units of Benálcool, Mundial and Tarumã - totaling 16 production units with the seal, which represent almost 30 million tons of our sugarcane. We expect to close the 2017/2018 crop year with three new units certified.

See on map when the units of Raízen obtained the first certificate.

EPA and CARB registration

Whether in products, whether in services, Raízen works to achieve excellence in everything it offers to its customers. The company has the main certifications that guarantee the traceability of production and the quality of products. Raízen also invests in initiatives to anticipate the needs of the markets in which it is present, acting at national and international levels to comply with the laws and serve customers that are increasingly more demanding.

This is the case of the Environmental Protection Agency - EPA, whose register is required for any company that wants to export ethanol to the United States. The certification attests to our ethanol as a fuel that complies with all the requirements connected with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Raízen also meets the requirements established by California, in the United States, which requires stringent environmental standards and specific registers for each plant exporting ethanol, certifying from the cultivation of the sugarcane to the transportation of ethanol to the final destination, in California. In addition, more recently, Raízen's second generation ethanol received the international certification in sustainability and carbon (ISCC), which ensures compliance with the parameters of the Guideline of Renewable Energy (RED) (EU-RL 2009/28/EC) of the European Union for sustainable production.

In all, 22 units of Raízen are registered with the EPA, 12 with CARB and the second generation ethanol plant with the ISCC.

Greenhouse Gas emissions inventory

Aware that there are GHG emissions associated, directly or indirectly, to our operations, we monitor their behavior through the Annual Inventory of GHG Emissions. This survey represents the first step of any company in the control of its emissions, considering that an accurate diagnosis is the key to the management of any variable. It is through the inventory that we evaluate the main sources of emission and plan how we can mitigate them through continuous improvement in our operations.

For the sixth consecutive year, we audited and published our inventory in accordance with the guidelines of the Brazilian GHG Protocol - the local branch of the main international benchmark for quantification of corporate emissions. Therefore, we maintain our goal of monitoring emissions and our commitment to the quality and transparency of this result.
